BREAKOUT SESSIONS When you register, you will be asked to identify two of 10 breakout sessions in which you would like to participate. The breakout sessions stem from requests from county teams at the 2008 Summit for more opportunities to share ideas and learn from each other. With this in mind, planners of the 2009 Summit designed the breakout sessions to foster topically driven roundtable discussions that promote interaction among participants. Unlike traditional workshops where participants passively listen to an instructor, each breakout session will be an active learning session with experts and representatives from successful programs acting as resources and discussion facilitators.

The 10 topics and their subtopics for the planned breakout sessions reflect the local challenges reported in Post-Summit County Plans and during Family and Children First Cabinet Council visits to each county.

In designing the breakout sessions, 2009 Summit planners focused on:

  • Responding to issues identified by counties
  • Highlighting programs that successfully address challenges
  • Keeping groups small to enable meaningful discussion
  • Promoting problem-solving and solution-focused conversation
  • Acknowledging diverse needs across jurisdictions
  • Offering each participant a wide variety of choices.

HOW IT WORKS: Breakout sessions will function under the “World Café” process. Topic rooms will be set up to accommodate a separate area for each subtopic. At the midway point of each session, participants can move to a different subtopic area within the same breakout session. Information gathered on each subtopic will be summarized and later posted on the Summit Web site.

CHOOSING YOUR TOPICS: Each of the 10 breakout sessions will be repeated once, giving participants the opportunity to participate in up to four different subtopic discussions over the course of the Summit. As you review the available topics and subtopics, consider coordinating registration with your county team members to get the maximum benefit from the Summit for your community. Your team could participate in 10 roundtable discussions on the topics most relevant to the families and children you serve.
